I first met Lou Kapcsandy at Taste Yountville First (2/07) and the blanket reply to all interested in this 2004 wine was “sorry, sold out”.   Given my passion for Napa and a little charm, Lou was willing to send us a couple cases.  We then visited Lou at the winery in April of this year to see the Kapcsandy winery, property and taste these 2005 wines.  What can I say? Lou is seriously passionate about making the best wine.  From one of the best vineyard sites in Napa Valley, the former Beringer Estate State Lane Vineyard, to a world class winery, best farming company, the right winemaking team (winemaker Rob Lawson & Denis Malbec from Château Latour), finest barrels, corks and so on.  Lou and his team leave more fruit on the ground in the vineyard than they bring into the winery and then they go through an intensive handsorting process to result in only the best fruit.   What impressed me most about the winery was how immaculate the cellar and barrel room were – everything from the barrels to the tanks and the floor were spotless.   What impressed me most about the wines were the incredible balance these wines showed.

Kapcsandy Family 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard  $175 -- This is Kapcsandy’s “Grand Vin”, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc.  This is powerful, rich and saturated with gorgeous notes of black currants, cassis, spice box, cedar, graphite and toasty oak.  This full-bodied Cabernet shows incredible complexity and is impeccably balanced.  Only 700 cases made.  95 Points, Robert Parker.  

Kapcsandy Family 2005 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard   $115 -- The Cuvee is defined by a big rich core of  black fruit, good complexity and definition.  This full-bodied youthful blend is bursting with blackberries, currant, chocolate, loam, flowers and toast.  51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, well-structured, seductive with power and elegance, and mouth-coating. Excellent now and sure to get even better!  94 Points, Robert Parker.

Kapcsandy Family 2005 Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard SOLD OUT --  Fullbodied, opulent, showing lavish blackberry-plum fruit, with chocolate, espresso, vanilla and charcoal.  91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, this is an incredible Cabernet-lovers Merlot that possesses the elegance and beauty of a well made Bordeaux.  This shows wonderfully ripe, voluptuous fruit yet this remains balanced through a long focused finish.  This will be even better in a couple of years and will cellar well for 12-15 years.  Only 250 cases produced.  95 Points, Robert Parker.

Kapcsandy Family 2005 Rosé State Lane Vineyard  $24  -- Fresh floral notes, with hints of red cherry-strawberry fruit, and minerals, this old-world style Rosé is full of flavor yet bone dry.  This is made from the gentle free run juice of the Estate Cuvee blend.  Excellent with your holiday meal, dry cheeses, burgers, or simply by itself! 

From Wine Spectator to Robert Parker, the Kapcsandy wines are the finest Cabernets of the 2005 Vintage.
