As you know, one of the highlights of my recent birthday trip to Napa was meeting Mark Herold. I am a big fan of Mark’s wines from Merus to Bucella, Hestan and Kobalt. Seeing Mark ended up being a “double treat” as the fun and dynamic Kevin Carrikar, proprietor of Kobalt, was delivering tacos to the crew and took the opportunity to break open his new 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. Tacos and a full-throttled Mark Harold Cabernet? You bet!   Anything goes on a rainy afternoon in Napa.

Kobalt

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

This shows incredibly dark, almost inky in the glass and a wonderful nose of chocolate covered raisins -- yum!  Full-bodied, fleshy and deep, this is rich with ripe blackberry compote, cassis, espresso, vanilla, and a hint of toasted caramel. This extracted, concentrated Cabernet is blended with 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, and is everything you would expect from Mark Harold.  Incredible purity, mighty structure, generous tannins, and an enormous long finish. This needs a couple of hours in the decanter if you are going to enjoy it soon, but this will age beautifully for at least another 10-15 years. I like this `05 much more than the `04 (Robert Parker agrees it is stronger).

With only 476 cases produced and Kevin already sold out, this is limited and will go fast.
