Fantastic New Whites for Spring (Case Prices in Parentheses)
Martin Fierro 2007
Chardonnay/Torrontes from Argentina -- $7.99 ($7.19) --
Tasty and lively in the mouth, this blend of Chardonnay and Argentina's
calling card, Torrontes, boasts flavors of key lime pie, aromas of lemon
blossoms and a persistent, bright finish. Such a delicious white wine.
Such a great price! Marc Jomain 2006 Bourgogne Chardonnay -- $20.99 ($18.89) --- Simply the best wine for the money at a recent tasting of the new 2006 white burgundies and Chateauneuf du Papes. Essentially de-classified Puligny-Montrachet at a great price. Nutty, rich, long-finishing and persistent.
Honig 2006 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc -- $14.99 ($13.49) -- Papaya, mango and grapefruit with fresh, lively acidity and a mouthwatering finish. Sauvigon Blanc blended with a dose of Semillon for richness. From family-owned and operated Honig Winery, just off Rutherford Road.
Costa de Oro 2006 Estate Chardonnay -- $19.99 ($17.99) -- Flat-out delicious Chardonnay made by our friend Gary Burk up in Santa Maria. Ripe apple, quince and pie spices in a sleek, polished package with refreshing acidity and a note vanilla spice on the finish. Incredibly good wine for the money! (Arriving Friday)
Chateau La Grave 1998 Ste Croix du Mont -- $19.99 ($17.99) -- Outstanding Sauternes-style dessert wine from Bordeaux. Honeyed on the nose, layered on the finish with exotic spices and flavors of apricot and cream in between. WOW! Sainte Croix du Mont is on the right bank of the Garone, next to Loupiac facing Sauternes.
Awesome Value Reds
d'Angelis 2003 Rosso Piceno Superiore from Italy -- $12.99 ($11.69) -- Super-cool, black cherry fruited, smoky and dense red wine made from Sangiovese, Montepulciano and an ancient grape called Passerina from the slopes of Ascoli Piceno, Italy, at the southern end of Le Marche.
Santa Ema 2005 60/40 from Chile -- $9.99 ($8.99) -- One of our biggest selling reds. A deliciously smooth blend of 60% Cabernet and 40% Merlot from Chile. Ripe red and black currant, whispers of oak spice, and a creamy smooth mouthfeel. Perfect "daily" wine to have around the house.
Helix 2004 Pomatia by Reininger, Columbia Valley, Washington -- $23.99 ($21.59) -- Fantastic blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc from Washington's Columbia Valley. Fragrant nose, rich in the mouth with abundant red and black fruits and sweet smoke on the finish. 90 pts, Wine Spectator
Cellers Can Blau 2006 from
Montsant, Spain -- $16.99 ($15.29) -- LAST
CALL (Just a few cases left of
this vintage) Plush, spiced, layered blend of Carignane, Grenache and
Syrah from about an hour south of Barcelona. One of our most popular
import wines. Exceptional value and much less expensive than wines
from neighboring Priorat. 90 pts - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
