Viura, this grape makes up most of the Rioja whites blends and is also
used with Parellada to make Spain’s delicious sparkling wine called Cava.
Flavors of
orange and tangerine are followed by a deliciously creamy texture.
Perfect for Springtime
sipping! |

Atalayas de Golban Ribera del
Duero
Rich and ripe
Tempranillo here, showing deep, dark black fruit and sweet, rich loam.
Blackberries, smoke, sweet caramel and more.
Another example of
Tempranillo’s ability to be thick and smooth while retaining its high
elevation acidity and its elegance. |

Cillar de Silos Ribera del Duero
One of the finest high-elevation Ribera's we have had in recent memory.
Full and deep with black fruits, a note of tar and sweet saddle leather
with wonderful spice and a long, dense finish. Needs time to open
up. We think this property is one of THE Spanish properties to keep
an eye on for amazing quality and still reasonable pricing! |

2003 |
Hacienda Monasterio Crianza Ribera del Duero
This
impressive wine comes from brilliant winemaker Peter Sisseck of Pingus
fame. Vineyards located halfway between Pesquera and Valbuena del
Duero are farmed to yields of just 1-1.5 kg per plant, producing the
intense Tinto Fino (Tempranillo clone) grapes that make up the
predominance of this blend, the balance going to Cab. Sauvignon, Merlot,
and Malbec. Dried flowers, ripe plum, black fruits, bright firm
acids, fine tannins, balance, purity, length, elegance, power. . . we
could go on and on. . .

Leda Vinas Viejas
Smoky and toasty with a core of juicy black cherry and
notes of mineral and pencil lead. Complex and muscular, this is 100%
Tempranillo aged in French and American oak. The project was put
together by Mariano Garcia, winemaker at Vega Sicilia for 30 years.
Intense violet nose, aromas of black berry preserve, toasted coffee wood
spice. Potent, elegant, with very silky tannins. Very
long-finishing. |

Cillar de Silos Torre Silos Ribera
del Duero
Fantastic, high
elevation Tempranillo off of 100+ year-old vines. Another stunner at our
Spanish Tasting this Spring
Robert
Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 points
”The
2004 Torresilos takes it to another level. This 100% Tempranillo is
sourced from estate vineyards averaging 60-80 years of age and is barrel
fermented and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being
bottled unfiltered. Saturated purple in color, it boasts an expressive
nose of spice, pepper, smoke, cherry and blackberry. This remarkably
concentrated wine has a supple texture, layers of ripe blue and black
fruit flavors, terrific focus, and a long, pure finish. There is enough
structure to support several years of additional bottle age before
drinking it over the following 10 years” |

Cillar de Silos Altos de Revilla
Ribera
del Duero
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -- 91
points
"This set of wines (all 100% Tempranillo) from Cillar de Silos located in
Ribera del Duero is impressive from top to bottom. The 2004 Altos de
Revilla, a wine produced only in great years of which this is the first.
It is a single vineyard selection from 60-year-old vines. The wine was
barrel fermented and aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months. It offers
a more complex nose than the Torresilos with notes of mocha and espresso,
toasty oak, vanilla, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. It is more elegant
but without the mid-palate concentration and finish. Nevertheless, it is
an outstanding wine which will benefit from 2-4 years of further cellaring
and should drink well for 8-10 years thereafter." |

Bodegas Izadi Crianza (Tempranillo)
This wine was one of THE big hits at our recent Spanish Event. Full of
red cherry and spice, medium weight in the mouth, but with a long, lilting
finish of spice and mineral. In a line-up full of tremendous reds, this one
really stood up. For the price, a remarkable wine. |

Bodegas Izadi Rioja "Seleccion"
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -- 90 points
"The 2001 Seleccion (a cuvee made only in
exceptional vintages) raises the bar considerably. It is a blend of 80%
Tempranillo and 20% Graciano from vines averaging 50+ years of age. The
wine is fermented in barrel, aged for 18 months in new French oak, and
bottled unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, it possesses a gorgeous nose of
scorched earth, smoky black fruits, and licorice. This is followed by a
medium-bodied, elegantly styled wine with excellent definition and focus,
ripe fruit and a pure, lengthy finish. There is still tannin to resolve so
give this wine 2-3 more years of bottle age and drink it over the
following 10 years." |

Priorat & Montsant |
|
2006 |
Cellers Can Blau Can Blau , Montsant
Still unbelievably under-priced, this wine is a plush,
spiced, layered blend of Carignane, Grenache and Syrah from the Montsant
region of Spain, about an hour or so south of Barcelona and inland off the
Mediterranean sea. The area produces layered wines with similarly
expressive spice and mineral notes
as its more
famous
neighbor Priorat,
but Montsant is way less expensive.

2005 |
Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses, Priorat
This knock-out blend of
Cabernet, Carignane and Grenache from Alvaro Palacios is opaque purple in
color with a nose of kirsch, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Layers of
ripe blackberry and black currant follow with layered minerality and notes
of brown spice and velvety tannins.
Alvaro Palacios has been one of the stars of Priorat for over 10
years now. 2005 was a drought year and gave him concentrated fruit that
he has turned into a stunning wine.... and an exceptional value at this
price, given that the top Priorats are going for hundreds of dollars. |

This is the oldest Carignane, Garnacha and Syrah vines from the estate.
Aged 20 months in new French Oak and bottled unfiltered.
Layered, super complex and long finishing. Black and blue fruit,
fragrant brown spice, and a good dose of minerals on the back end.

Trio Infernal, Priorat
60% Garnacha and 40% Carinena in the hands of Jean Michel Gerin (Cote
Rotie), Laurent Combier (Crozes Hermitage), and Peter Fischer (Coteaux
D'Aix) founded Trio Infernal, who got together and purchased 50 acres in
Priorat in 2000. Trio Infernal indeed. These three
groundbreaking wine makers would make the trek down on weekends to oversee
the birth of their dream. The result? A deeply
layered, complex wine dark cherries, chocolate and coffee. Long-finishing and complex. An outstanding Priorat for the price. |

EVOHE Garnacha
This little
Grenache is packed full of tasty red and black cherry, fragrant herbs a
note of strawberry liqueur and a mineral finish. Made from old vines
Garnacha Peluda (original clones of Garnacha) from the area around Lécera,
200 km NW of the Priorat in Bajo Aragon. Cold fermented in stainless
steel with no oak used at all, this wine focuses on Garnacha’s pure fruit,
natural spice and acidity. Excellent wine for the money. |

Tres Picos
Garnacha, Campo de Borja, Spain
Plush and fragrant Grenache
giving mouthfuls of red raspberry and blackberry with hints of sweet
saddle leather and vanilla bean on the finish. This is a perennial
over-achiever and, remarkably, still priced low enough to fit most
people’s “daily” wine budget… but it drinks so much better than daily
wine! |

little blend of Monastrell, Cabernet, Syrah & Tempranillo. The wine comes
